That face you make when you gotta say, “What now?!” I usually hate bragging but I HAVE to send a word of encouragement! I got yelled at ALL DAY today for the way I was managing one of my patients! The patient wanted one thing, and because I believed in her, I wanted the same and for her to be happy! Let me tell y’all that NO ONE agreed with what I wanted to do! I voiced my opinions and they were shut down on more than one occasion, sometimes with a harsh backhanded comment on the side! But because I believed in MY PATIENT and fought for what she wanted, I pressed on and we had a SUCCESSFUL vaginal delivery! The moral for all the up and coming docs? When you believe in your patient and what you’re doing, FIGHT FOR IT! It’s hard to do so when you’re the “newbie doc” and you’re so unsure of yourself. But when you know yourself and your patient, fate most likely is on your side! I’m still learning to not doubt or discredit myself just because I am a new doctor and still making some mistakes here and there, even if others want to go ahead and do the discrediting for me. We ALL have a voice, no matter how much experience we have under our belts, and you can make a difference by speaking up! One of the MANY things that Howard taught me: PATIENT ADVOCACY! Fight on! ✊?

Jeremiah 31:16-17: “Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears, for there is a reward for your work… There is hope for your future, declares the Lord!” According to statistics, I was not supposed to stand before you, an established young woman. If it had not been for my community praying for me and blessing me through the gift of donation, I doubt I would have achieved this platform. This is why I preach giving back so much; you never know whose life you can change! I truly hope my achievement of tears to triumph will inspire you all to give back as much as you can, to our communities AND INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING! Without my HBCU I would NOT have my degree! Remember ladies, you can inspire, but to be a STRONG inspiration, you have to lead with more than just your body! (Matthew 26:41 : “The spirit is strong but the body is weak.”) I know this scripture is about temptation, but I also like to use it to remind myself that if you are leading with your body, you are leading yourself down the WEAKEST of paths you could travel, and you are putting forth a WEAK effort at inspiring others! Go out and dominate with your spirit of fortitude! Lead with your STRONG hand! – Dr. Andrea Alexander, M.D.
