​That phrase has been around since the rise of Afrocentrist thought in pop culture.

“Dark-skinned black women are closer to their roots, more ‘soulful,’ and thus good in bed.”

Tupac attempted a less aggressive take on it in “Keep Ya Head Up” (1993):

Some say the blacker the berry
The sweeter the juice
I say the darker the flesh
Then the deeper the roots
