Trayvon Martin Petition Is Fastest-Growing in Change.org History
The Change.org petition created by Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton calling for the prosecution of their son Trayvon Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, has become the fastest-growing campaign in the site’s history.
The petition called “Prosecute the killer of our son, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin,” has gained over 2.1 million signatures since its launch on March 8. During its most viral stages, more than 1,000 people were signing the petition each minute.
Change.org released this infographic Wednesday, detailing social media’s role in driving national attention toward the Trayvon Martin case. Becoming the site’s most viral cause was no small feat. There are over 100,000 petitions on the website to date.
It took a few weeks for social media users to learn about the case. #Trayon first trended on Twitter March 17, three weeks after the teen was shot to death by the neighborhood watch volunteer.
“The overwhelming public outcry has not only brought some comfort to Trayvon’s family, but has prompted action at all levels of justice,” Jackie Mahendra, Change.org director of storytelling told Mashable. “People truly are finding their voice through social media and channeling their anger into action.”
On March 26, one month after Trayvon’s death, his parents led a march through Sanford, Fla., carrying the 2 million Change.org signatures on a banner.

I think that this whole media firestorm in regards to Trayvon’s killing is wack. They’re trying to make it a white/black issue, when Zimmermen wasn’t even white. To see 10,000 Black folks protesting this is quite disgusting considering that n*ggas is getting killed everyday in the hood. Why don’t they protest the drug dealers? Why not protest the black on black crime? Nah…that’s all cool, as long as we’re killing each other. And to see Obama use this as a political calculation to pump his campaign is disgusting. All those Congressmen wearing hoodies…where were they when the NDAA was to be voted on? Where are they when Obama signed the National Resources Authorization Executive Order which gives the President 100% control over the US economy? Yet, they want to make a blown up issue about this? GTFO!!

I hate to say this, but Black folks in Florida need to bumrush dude house and enact a citizen’s arrest. Zimmerman “created” a self defense situation by first following and stalking Trayvon in his vehicle, when he was told several times to stop. Second, he continued to pursue Trayvon on foot through an apartment complex. Third, he initiated an attack on this young man. So if Trayvon was whooping his azz, didn’t he have the right to do so? Zimmerman created this situation so he could “legally” shoot a 140 lb. teenager who possessed no weapon and no drugs, but he did have skittles and ice cream. And to hear these white folks not use their common sense and say “Blacks, Obama, and liberals are making it a racial issue and it’s not.” White men know they can get away with shooting Black men if they can prove “any” aggression on the Black male’s side. There is no such thing as color blind, because they see you in color…lol. What so-called crime was Trayvon committing to make Zimmerman pursue him and call him coon on the phone with 911? Did Zimmerman finger the wrong guy, and since we all look alike, decide to trail Trayvon? Does it matter? Because clearly this was, at a minimum, manslaughter, the same crime Black men go to prison for whether it’s self defense or not. Because you can’t take the law into your own hands. Unless your white.
BTW, Zimmerman is White, because he declared himself so. Look at the Police report and the arrest record. Many light-skinned Hispanics, especially those who have been in the US for several generations, classify themselves as white. So ALL THESE 10,000 BLACK FOLKS got it right. We need to defend our own, no one else. This teenager was killed because he was Black.Period. End of story. If you not 100% down with this cause, then you not down with Black folks. @green you’re bringing up a strawman argument because you’re frustrated that black people are pressuring the prosecution of a white man nobody would compare black on black crime to what Zimmerman did unless they’re a complete idiot, black people are very critical of black on black crime they just haven’t been successful in stopping it ,you cannot fix the crime in the black community by marching and petitioning, that is a financial problem, all of our leaders know this but have ignored it because they are secretly working for the white man

there is a huge effort in progress to reduce and correct crime, poverty, health, education, financial troubles in the black community. one of the biggest challenges to that effort are laws, culture, and a judicial system that are still prejudiced towards black men.
trying to make the point that black people are hypocrites for not being as riled up about the ills of the black community vs this one incident of murder is dumb. it’s like saying, because we can’t give all problems the same attention then we should never take the time to focus on any of them.
And for the record, I don’t give a damn if Zimmerman is hispanic, white, or any other color, it means nothing to the stanch that I’m taking on the issue.
