School Administrators Withhold Diploma from Valedictorian Who Said ‘Hell’ in Speech

· August 20, 2012

Kaitlin Nootbaar graduated valedictorian from Prague High School in Prague, Oklahoma back in May. She gave a speech on the occasion that included a quote she said was inspired by “Twilight” (no, now’s not the time to get angry): “When I first started school I wanted to be a nurse, then a veterinarian and now that I’m getting closer to graduation,” she said, “people would ask me, what do you want to do and I said how the hell do I know? I’ve changed my mind so many times.”

In the speech she gave to the school, though, “hell” was “heck.” Caught up in the moment at graduation, though, she replaced it with “hell.” Now, the school refuses to hand over her diploma unless she gives an apology letter, which she refuses to write. Good for her.

Meanwhile, the school system’s superintendent, Dr. Rick Martin, said this in a total non-statement, “This matter is confidential and we cannot publicly say anything about it.”
