If you’re living on welfare in North Carolina, you may soon be out of luck when it comes to the lottery. Raleigh-Durham’s ABC affiliate WTVD-TV is reporting that lawmakers in that state are proposing legislation that would bar people on welfare or in bankruptcy from purchasing lottery tickets.

As reporter Anna Laurel explains, “the lawmaker drafting this legislation told us today that the vendor selling the lottery ticket would be penalized if they know the person is on welfare or in bankruptcy, which has some questioning if this law really solves any problems.”

The Republican congressman behind the bill, Rep. Paul Stam laid out his reasoning by saying, “We’re giving them welfare to help them live, and yet by selling them a ticket, we’re taking away their money that is there to provide them the barest of necessities.”

But as the Raleigh news team discovered, local lottery vendors have serious concerns. One clerk was quoted as saying, “I don’t feel comfortable to ask my customers what their financial status is… it’s not my business.”

Meanwhile, North Carolina’s NAACP president Rev. William Barber said that while his organization doesn’t “agree with the lottery to start with” he would prefer to have Rep. Stam focus on larger issues “Rather than Mr. Stam having a side argument, ask him to stop blocking labor rights for poor people and working people. Ask him to have a real conversation about real wage.”

    There are TOO MANY white people on welfare, they will never do away with it. Now if the majority of people on welfare were black (as is perceived) then it would possibly happen.

    • MoorFedayeen says:

      @Crush Even if most blacks were on welfare, which they aren’t, govt still wouldn’t do away with it because it creates too many degenerates and monsters we pay them to take cre of via their “justice” system.

      Walk ya azz through a govt subsidized hood or project at night and see what happens to you. Now these homes are funded by the govt. They must want it this way right? There’s a lobby for the prison system that I can’t recall the name of but they have quite the influence on laws and policy regarding the poor and how they’re treated. Why? Because many of these poor folks, especially the males, will end up in the prison industry’s care eventually. Doing away with welfare and making the ppl self sufficient is the LAST thing they wanna see.

    need to do away with allowing non-essential purchases on ebt.  i also support drug testing or intervention for people on welfare and wic.  that’s one of the main reasons they can’t get up out and get something.

    • Presto 2.5 says:

      @BzB
       i thought non-essentials are already done away with?…cant buy anything but food?…atleast in tha Cack anywayz..but of course you got these Arabs…allowing purchases of non-essentials(beer,cigs ect)…using loopholes…they need to look at the merchants…and fine them…

      and if ppl cant eat….yall dudes havent seen shyt get bad yet…they should have the recipients show that they are looking for jobs tho…jus like unemployment…fillout a form of applied applications…or dropped off resumes…with a social worker that stops by…but then again with these bummy azz parents nowadayz…they wouldnt do it…and the kids still go hungry..#LoseLose

         you’re right about them regulating the merchants better.  when i stop by the little corner stores instead of going to the big chains i always see the merchants letting people get by with stuff they shouldn’t.  buying packs of swishers and papers along with milk and cereal.

        i also think they need a transition plan for people on gov assistance.  i don’t agree with cutting them off cold turkey, but there has to be incentive and a pathway to get them out of that dependent cycle.

    What is the purpose of this bill?  You can’t at least in this area buy lottery tickets with EBT or Credit Cards.  You can only buy with cash so is this bill saying people can only use their cash for what the government tells them they can buy?   And people are b1tching about the 2nd amendment.

  7. BrownSugar says:

    That’s BS! You can’t buy non-food items on an EBT card. And if they do buy a lotto ticket with their money, it’s with the HOPE to win that sh!t so they can get OFF of welfare. These lawmakers getting paid BIG bucks to talk about nonsense sh!t. We need to start holding their a$$es to the fire spending our money on their hoes and viagra.
