A dispute over a bar bill is the supposed cause of the beating that killed Malcolm Shabazz (grandson of Malcolm X) on Thursday morning in Mexico City, according to the AP.

Shabazz, who led a troubled life, was visiting his friend, recently deported activist Miguel Suarez, when “they and several other people had gone to a bar near the downtown plaza that is home to Mexico City’s mariachis.”

After being confronted with a $1,200 bar bill by the owner of the establishment, a fight ensued and Shabazz was taken behind the building and beaten. Suarez told the AP that he “found Shabazz injured outside the bar and took him to a hospital where he died on Thursday.”

Shabazz had recently been enrolled at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, and was writing a memoir about his life while traveling around the United States, speaking out against youth violence.

His family has released the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved El Hajj Malcolm El Shabazz. To all who knew him, he offered kindness, encouragement and hope for a better tomorrow. Although his bright light and boundless potential are gone from this life, we are grateful that he now rests in peace in the arms of his grandparents and the safety of God. We will miss him.”

A sad end to a turbulent life.

  4. Just_Saying says:

Mexico City is quite cosmopolitan. That figure is not at all hard to imagine. Running it up and not having the pesos to pay for it is another matter altogether. So is beating someone to death over a bar bill.

  5. Old Skool Quote says:

    Yeah ok! Setup

  6. torchilegette says:

what if they were trying to force him to pay something he didn’t owe?

  7. MoorFeen4Lorraine says:

Well I’d be steaming mad too if a maphucka ran up a $1200 or any bill and couldn’t pay it. Keep this kids likeness far away from our beloved King, Malcolm X

  8. Pceezy says:

I was wondering what happened to him since he burned down the home of his grandmother BETTY SHABAZZ where she died of injuries

  9. Now Thats Pcp says:

He was assassinate and this story is just printed to undermine his character…..if people follow, you would know he was in custody by the FBI and now all of sudden drinking in a mexican bar….dont believe everything you read especially concerning our black leaders

    • jamarxyz says:

yeah, you cant believe everything you read.

      • MoorFeen4Lorraine says:

And why would he be in their custody? You can’t just drop stuff like that and leave out. Who and what would they gain by assassinating dude? You right about the media though. That pic of him is corny. N1gga aint Malcolm

        • Now Thats Pcp says:

Look it up and find out…..the pic of him is beautiful…he’s no Malcom but to EMULATE him rather than a gang leader is a WONDERFUL THING

          • MoorFeen4Lorraine says:

Jeezy took the same kind of pic in Malcolm likeness. A pic means sh1t. I rather this dude do as Malcolm X would have and lived as if Malcolm were watching him 24/7 but instead the lil f*ck killed a vital piece of history, his own grandmother and Malcolm’s widow. Ms Shabazz died trying to save him, the very person who set the fire.

I did end up doing a bit of ready after your first comment out of curiosity and I can definitively say good riddance to this son of a b1tch.

You do dirt, you get dirt..or in his case put in the dirt. F*ck ‘em

          • Now Thats Pcp says:

The fire situation was a known accident, and he did do as Malcom but he’s not Malcom….read up and learn about the brother….you spewing more negativity than a uncle tom

          • MoorFeen4Lorraine says:

How was the fire an accident????? He said he did it on purpose himself but never meant for anyone to get hurt. Maybe you right but I also got the right to hold that incident against him. I think karma came back around finally.

RIP Betty Shabazz & Malcolm X.

I keep reading you alls comments. Set up, assassination! This dude is not Malcolm. He hasn’t don a damn thing Malcolmist exept be his nephew. What is gained by setting him up, assassinating him! A lot of people didn’t even know this dude existed. Not trying to step on ol boys memory but if I’m wrong please educate me.

    • MoorFeen4Lorraine says:

      +1

Exactly what I said. Hell Mexico murder rate is schizo. I would never go over there, not even to Cancun these days.

  12. mrdaveyd says:

No malcolm is not his grandfather and a troubled man at 12 who burned his grandmothers home had changed quite a bit as a young man 28 years old.. He attended Cal berkeley, did a lot of speaking about youth violence.. spent quite a bit of time working with folks.. Thats why he was in Mexico to help some of his people who were part of a labor organization.. prior to that Malcolm had been traveling the world at the invite of many folks.. He did his pilgrimage to Mecca, traveled throughout the Middle East and Africa.. was part of delegation that went to Libya and had spent time in Syria.. It was after the Syria trip the FBI hemmed him up and prevented him from leaving on his next trip which was to Iran.. malcolm also talked quite candidly about his past including what happened with him when that house burned killing his grandmother.. (WC)

    • M0311 says:

Thank you. Like I said, educate me. I don’t know much about this man and I don’t claim to know everything. Based on what you wrote, it appears that he was trying to make a difference. This world can be a cruel place and I hate that he couldn’t fulfill his distiny.

  13. Bob says:

A pale and pitiful imitation of Malcolm. Genetics don’t mean nothing. Genes have to flower in the right context, and the context for this boy was all screwed up.
