Cornel West: President Obama Doesn’t Deserve To Be Sworn In With MLK’s Bible

“You don’t play with Martin Luther King, Jr. and you don’t play with his people, said West. “By his people, I mean people of good conscience, fundamentally good people committed to peace and truth and justice, especially the Black tradition that produced it.

“All of the blood, sweat and tears that went into producing a Martin Luther King, Jr. generated a brother of such high decency and dignity that you don’t use his prophetic fire for a moment of presidential pageantry without understanding the challenge he represents to all of those in power regardless of what color they are.

“The righteous indignation of a Martin Luther King, Jr. becomes a moment of political calculation. And that makes my blood boil. Why? Because Martin Luther King, Jr died…he died…for the three crimes against humanity that he was wrestling with. Jim Crow, traumatizing, terrorizing, stigmatizing Black people. Lynching, not just ‘segregation’ as the press likes to talk about.

“Second: Carpet bombing in Vietnam killing innocent people, especially innocent children, those are war crimes that Martin Luther King , Jr. was willing to die for. And thirdly, was poverty of all colors, he said it is a crime against humanity for the richest nation in the world to have so many of it’s precious children of all colors living in poverty and especially on the chocolate side of the nation, and on Indian reservations and Brown barrios and yellow slices and Black ghettos — we call them hoods now, but ghettos then.

“So I said to myself ain’t nothing wrong with putting your hand on the bible, even though the bible’s talking about justice, Jesus is talking about the least of these, but when you put it on Martin’s bible, I said ‘this is personal for me,’ because this is the tradition that I come out of.”

MLK was not an actor…we know what he stood for….i cant put Obama on that same level.

  4. MoorFedayeen says:

What more can anyone say. At this point either you like him or hate Obama. Pick a side. And jamar you sure about that? MLK was quite wealthy. Where did all that money come from and was he a communist. Nothing wrong with communism but he failed to disclose it if he was. That’s an actor to me.

    • MoorFedayeen says:

Not to mention if MLK was alive its a fact that he wouldn’t like Obama just based off the wars Obama supported and some he started. Many ppl believe Martin’s death came greatly in part to his mass appeal and protest of the Vietnam war. There was just too much to lose and Martin had too much of a following to risk an even bigger anti-war movement, like Pat Tilman. RIP to both.

      • BzB says:

@MoorFedayeen   it wasn’t so much the vietnam war.  it was really more about his call to action on civil rights and human rights. his ability to empower people and bring them to action.  he demonstrated the the power of blacks and minorities united in a part of the country where they wanted us to stay second class citizens and less than a human being.  they still wanted to treat us like cattle.  he made black people recognize their strength in unity (economic and political unity) and how it could bring real change.  the local and federal gov was  scared sh1tless over what a educated, focused, and committed black population could do in america.  that’s why they killed off our leaders and then pumped our communities full of drugs and gang warfare.

        • MoorFedayeen says:

@BzB I said partly the reason. Never underestimate that war complex and who’s pockets King would affect.

The point is would MLK like Obama or not, and I think he wouldn’t, assuming he was still true to his past beliefs. So why use the man’s bible then? Hell, how the hell did the White House even get the MLK’s bible??? This is no different then Jay or Nas going back over a Pac track and laying a verse. Its wack. Pac didn’t fuq with you.

        • BzB says:

@MoorFedayeen   i think it’s presumptuous to assume what MLK would or wouldn’t like.  times have changed a whole lot since the 50s and 60s.  some of MLKs followers and peers do support obama, while some don’t.  pac may have changed or had different perspective over time too.  who would have guessed that nas and jigga would have made up after their epic beef???

        • jamar says:

people are supposed to grow mentally…you see how Malcolm X changed his views after visiting Mecca…it was an eye opener…he out grew a lot of his jealous peers and saw Elija in a different way…5yrs from now you should be smarter and wiser than you are today…but sadly a lot of us dont grow…a lot of us are getting dumber…too busy following.

Not going in the Cornel West, you can’t place MLK’s Bible above anyone else’s. If you want to preserve King’s Bible as a historical artifact that’s fine. But to don’t place his Bible being more sacred than any other book of God. That’s just being arrogant on West part. When did Cornel West became the PR spoke’s man for God anyway. It’s okay for Obama place his hands on Holy Bible, but not the book used by Martin Luther King’s. Be for real, then he; West goes of a tangent about Wall Street, Somali, etc. Where was West during the Bust administration. It seems the white man gets a pass on their atrocities because he used the Bible from God and not Kings…and doing this in front of a panel consisting of White people and Newt. West is way of of pocket in my opinion.

Not going agree with Cornel West, he’s off base. First you can’t place MLK’s Bible above anyone else’s. The Bible is the book of God and not King’s. This Fredrick Douglas wannabe needs to sit his a$$ down! I’m sick and tired of hearing all of this negative bs that comes out of his mouth. Why wasn’t he vocal during any other presidential election when the “white”  man was running sh!t? He wasn’t this vocal when GW was plucking our a$$es left & right 12 yrs ago and lying about this senseless war that put this country in an economic crisis. Ninja needs to go do something with this d@mn head!

  13. BzB says:

y’all saw django?  cornell west acting like sam jacksons character in django right now.  hating on obama for taking a non-traditional route for getting things done for minorities and the underprivileged from within the confines of the imperfect system we live in.

cornell has to get it out of his thick skull that obama is not a president for black people only.  he can’t focus on saving black people from all the injustices we face, even those created by the gov obama leads.  that would be the most counterproductive way of helping black people.  the backlash would be epic and would do way more harm than good.  nor should he.  some of the problems are issues that our people have to address within themselves.  obama can’t make people get out of gangs.  he can’t make people want to participate in their communities.  he can’t make successful black athletes and entertainers want to be role models and examples.

i’ll say it again, obama is far from perfect.  he’s a politician.  however he’s done more to help minorities and the under privileged (which affects black people the most) than any other president before him, excluding lincoln signing of the emancipation proclamation.

we should want more and we should pressure obama to do more, but this crab in a barrel approach that cornell takes is shameful imo.

  14. Presto 2.5 says:

Why do we get mad over the facts?…Dr. West makes valid points about the blasphemy of using MLK’s Bible…but it is a personal but very valid opinion…and was back up with FACTS…(Bombings, poverty,WallSt,wire tap’ers)…but also stated that Obama was the better option between the “Choices” given…but far from a solution…

Obama has done alot for the poor/middle class…but behind closed doors his actions reflect the actions of any other puppet…killing women, children, and innocents with warcrime bombings…and underline objectives..

i do support the pres…but i do not walk around blind to the facts…or get upset at anyone questioning the behind the curtain actions….

and alot of folk askin…”Where was he during the Bush Admin?”…”Still fighting…but supressed by the media..unless you went to great detail to find Dr.West’s lectures and opinions on certain matters…they kept it from you…but now they let him loose on Obama…Coincidence?…Stop it Gullable azz niccas!…lol

Don’t see why Cornel can’t just be happy that there is an african american president.  That should inspire other young blacks to see that sky’s the limit.  Keep your criticism in private

  16. JUGHEAD1 says:

QUOTE FOR CORNELL; IF YOU DONT STICK TO YOUR VALUES WHEN THEIR TESTED, ( BUSH ADMIN) THEN THEIR NOT VALUES,  BUT HOBBIES WHEN ITS CONVIENT TO ACT UPON.
HOW BOUT THAT! DONT LURK IN THE SHADOWS WHEN YOU KNOW THINGS R UPON YOU.
