Charles Barkley,Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen Reply To Kobe’s Comments About The USA Olympic Basketball Team

· July 12, 2012

When Kobe Bryant mentioned that the current USA Olympic basketball team could’ve beaten the 1992 Dream Team, I don’t think he expected everyone like Charles Barkley,Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen to reply.

Who do you think would of won 1992 Dream Team or the current USA Olympic basketball team?

“Well, just from a basketball standpoint, they obviously have a lot more size than we do — you know, with (David) Robinson and (Patrick) Ewingand (Karl) Malone and those guys,” Bryant told Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday. “But they were also — some of those wing players — were also a lot older, at kind of the end of their careers. We have just a bunch of young racehorses, guys that are eager to compete.

“So I don’t know. It’d be a tough one, but I think we’d pull it out.”

In an interview on The Mike Missanelli Show on 97.5 The Fanatic Philadelphia, Dream Team member Charles Barkley said his squad would win by double digits.

“Oh yeah, that’s no disrespect,” Barkley said. “I ain’t got to badmouth them. But like I said, their point guards weren’t going to beat us. That’s a no-brainer.”

Barkley also brushed aside Bryant’s comments about the Dream Team’s age.

“I just started laughing,” Barkley said. “How old is Kobe Bryant? He’s 34? And he’s calling us old? At the time, we were only like 28, 29. Michael Jordan and me were the same age. We were both 29. …

“Other than Kobe, LeBron (James) and Kevin Durant, I don’t think anybody else on that team makes our team.”

Michael Jordan says there’s no way Kobe Bryant and this year’s USA Olympic basketball team could’ve beaten the 1992 Dream Team.

Jordan told The Associated Press Thursday that he laughed, “I absolutely laughed” when hearing Bryant’s comments that the squad training in Las Vegas could take Jordan and company.

Jordan says there was “no comparison” which team was better, adding that Byrant comparing the two teams “is not one of the smarter things he ever could have done.”

Jordan spoke prior to a celebrity golf tournament in Charlotte.

He says the 1992 team, which included 11 future Hall of Famers and won its six games by an average of more than 43 points en route to capturing the gold medal, may not have been as athletic but was definitely smarter. -AP

i respect both teams. both teams are special and both teams are sprinkled with greatness, all team usa gotta do this year is win the gold to justify it.

      I co-sign @Lateef. GO USA!!!

      • E-Dub

Wait. Winning isn’t enough. The Dream team was killing the rest of the world by 20 plus points. The Dream team dominated everyone.

        • http://atlnightspots.com Aaron

That’s because the international competition was drastically different today as compared to 92. If you knew anything about basketball you’d know that.

Kobe’s career is at the stage where he makes crazy statements to get attention. With the way he plays hero ball and low shooting % he would help out the Dream Team. Barkley’s response had me laugh’n. People are looking at Magic and Bird when they say old. But, MJ, Pippen, and Barkley were not old and we know MJ and Pippen went on to win multiple rings after this.

What the hell was he supposed to say? That the dream team would’ve mopped the floor with the 2012 team. Bottom line is that if these two teams were to play in their primes, it would be a very close game because even though the dream team has more bigs but the 2012 has more skill, speed, and agility. Also the dream team never had to face a healthy spainish national team like the 2008 squad had to. All of the dream teams foes were basically garbage, whereas nowadays team usa has to face some players internationally that are their teammates in the nba.

      • http://atlnightspots.com Aaron

By the way, the dream team was so great that they lost an exhibition game against a squad that featured bobby hurley and chris webber.

I see someone didn’t watch The Dream Team Documentary. Coach Daly threw the game to get the team to listen to him. That same team that “beat” the Dream Team lost didn’t score the very next day.

There’s no way the 2012 team would have beaten the Dream Team. The only one that has any heart is Kobe and Pippen would have put him on lock. Jordan would have LOVED to go against LeBron!!

          • http://atlnightspots.com Aaron

Yeah, just like stockton would’ve loved going up against westbrook, williams, and paul. And I’m sure that magic or barkley would’ve loved to matchup with durant. Look I’m not saying that the 2012 team would’ve beaten the dream team but a lot of guys act like thr dream team would’ve blown them out like they did to some of the international teams back then, and that’s just not the case. Also I didn’t need to watch the documentary, I remember that whole experience and i just didn’t like the way they consipired to keep isiah off the team. Besides, how come no one ever talks about dream team 2? I always felt that DT2 was just as good if not better all around team.

92 was iconic for real…still got love for kobe tho

+1 typical Kobe, it would best just not to respond to Kobe but MJ said it right!

  • real talk

People people people…. Compare the teatms take off christian and they are considered the greatest ever. They was so good people dont realize they never called one time out the whole tournament. The 2008 team almost lost 2 games. Thats enough said rite there. So my question is this. Who is the only big man they really have is KEVIN LOVE and TYSON CHANDLER. 92 team had EWIND, ROBINSON, MALONE, BARKLEY. kobe is great but lets b real… He aint f*ckin wit jordan.

The 92 team embarrassed the world, that is why most countries invested heavily in the training, coaching, and even some U.S players just to catch up. Look at the talent coming from other countries today this was due to the “92 Dream Team.”

I personally watch a few of those games, I remember the time well. You could see the looks on the other teams faces.

Kobe is young enough to say he played with Jordan, now he bout to get played by Jordan as far as this matter goes.

  • jamar

lebron wouldnt be driving the lane like he do against Karl Malone…basketball looked a little bit realer back in those days…you could play a little bit of defense back in the day…todays game is just straight up hollywood.

    • MoorFedayeen

True and that sucks. Everything is fixed to a degree. Some are blatant

  • REX REDBONES!!!!!

I don’t think that this 2012 team could beat THE DREAM TEAM,but u could conceivably come up with other halloffamers in their prime n put them all together such ad KARREM,WILT,SHAQ @ center,KOBE,LEBRON,TIM DUNCAN,AKEEM ALIJUAN,JULIUS IRVING,ISAIAH,REGGIE MILLER,OSCAR ROBERSON,A.I. ETC…that could give them a run for their money if all were in their PRIME N MIGHT JUST BEAT THEM

  • jamar

NBA2K13 should put this in the game…insread of just having classic teams, add the option to put the different hall of famers together and make your own hall of fame teams…

  • Tats

“For him to make that comparison, it’s one of those things where it creates conversation,” Jordan said. “I guess we’ll never know. I’d like to think that we had 11 Hall of Famers on that team, and whenever they get 11 Hall of Famers, you call and ask me who had the better Dream Team. Remember now, they learned from us. We didn’t learn from them.”

The last two sentences nailed it ahahah!

  • Edwin

3/4 of the players on the 2012 squad could easily be HOF’s. Put them on any squad in any given time frame and keep them there for their whole careers, e.g. the 80’s, and they would have become the Hall of Fame players for their respective team. So all this talk that the dream team and its ‘HOF’s’ would dismantle the 12′ team is a bunch of horseradish…

      Edwin < NO BRAIN

  • Clicko Gold

We got a depleated team this year man, no derrick rose, no wade, no bosh, no dwight, no bynum, and now no griffin.. If they had a healthy team it would be easy bra. They would have waaay to many gaurds for them, kobe and jordan would be goin at it, lebron and magic, scootie and wade, shit durant and bird. It would have to come down to tha bench which i think would give 2012’s team tha edge

  • Jake in Paris

Kobe is on that ish…In my Curtis Payne voice the 92 team would tear dat aaaaaaaaaa up!!!
