Although Michael was not the first he was definately one of the best to ever do the moonwalk and on this day marks the 30th anniversary that the spectacular move was done.

On March 25th 1983, during the Motown 25 taping Michael took to the stage to break out his most memorable move. Till this day many have argued if he had made the dance up on the spot but in his book he goes on to share where he got his inspirartion from to do the move:

“I had been practicing the Moonwalk for some time,” he wrote in his 1988 memoir, which tellingly was ti*led Moonwalker, “and it dawned on me in our kitchen [on the night before the taping] that I would finally do the Moonwalk in public on Motown 25. Now the Moonwalk was already out on the street by this time, but I enhanced it a little when I did it. It was born as a breakdance step, a ‘popping’ type of thing that black kids had created dancing on the street corners in the ghetto…So I said, ‘This is my chance to do it,’ and I did it. These three kids taught it to me. They gave me the basics–and I had been doing it a lot in private. I had practiced it together with certain other steps. All I was really sure of was that on the bridge to ‘Billie Jean’ I was going to walk backward and forward at the same time, like walking on the moon.”

I remember watching the Motown 25 Special as a kid; And before Mike performed Billie Jean he did a set with his brothers. It was amazing because his voice was soft and smooth like cashmere. I remember sayin to myself “Man, he sounds just like his records!” His dance steps were razor sharp and electric. His wardrobe was sparkling & fly. After the Jackson 5 medley, he performed Billie Jean and he wowed us all with his rhythm, talent, and dancing ability..While he was performing Billie Jean I remember saying to myself that there was no such thing as a celebrity or superstar. I said that because if there was such a thing as a celebrity or superstar – then what the hell was Michael Jackson cause no one had more talent than him. It was Michael Jackson and everyone else. I felt that way as a kid and I still feel that way to day. There’s a level up there high in the sky that only Michael Jackson touched. God bless you Mike.
